Women Unite Nationwide to Break Silence on Menopause Awareness

Women across Lagos, Abuja, Jos, and Port Harcourt have joined a nationwide health walk organised by Meno Haven to mark World Menopause Day, calling for greater awareness, open dialogue, and community support for women undergoing menopause — a natural transition affecting over 20 million Nigerian women. Themed “Steps That Break the Silence,” the event featured a morning fitness session, health talks, and wellness checks aimed at dismantling stigma, promoting lifestyle medicine, and fostering empathy for women navigating this critical life stage. According to Meno Haven, millions of Nigerian women experience menopausal symptoms but remain silent due to cultural misconceptions, stigma, and lack of accurate information. The group hopes its awareness campaigns will normalize menopause conversations and empower women to seek support and care. Founder of Meno Haven, Adeyinka Aderoju, said the initiative was born out of her personal struggles with severe menopausal symptoms such as insomnia, panic attacks, and heart palpitations — experiences that inspired her to create a safe, supportive space for women. “I didn’t have anyone to tell me what I was going through,” Aderoju shared. “Education and knowledge are powerful. When you’re informed, you’re in control. Meno Haven is a sisterhood — you’re not alone.” Another member, Ayeni Eunice Debola, emphasized the need for education, noting that many women mistake menopause symptoms for illness or spiritual issues due to ignorance. For Mrs. Iyabo Oloruntoba, adopting healthy habits and learning about menopause helped her manage hot flushes, body aches, and insomnia. “Regular walks, exercises, and self-education changed my experience,” she said. Through its outreach, Meno Haven continues to champion open conversations and compassionate care — turning menopause from a silent struggle into a shared journey of strength and understanding. I believe education and knowledge about the menopause stage is very important. Many women are suffering in silence. Some feel they are the only one going through their predicaments alone. “Together at Meno Haven we learn, educate and walk through the journey together. We usually have webinars where we bring in experts into the community. They teach women on what can be done, especially alleviating the symptoms. We also have clinical nutritionists and counsellors. “Exercise, nutrition and others have been identified as ways to overcome the associated challenges facing women in the Menopause stage. Men know what women are going through. Some care, while some others do not. Many women fall into depression. I’ve friends in UK, Canada, U.S who are following the community. “Some women are now going to menopause at early age, even especially at the age of 30. Many women of different age and categories need sensitization. It is a sisterhood, more women need to join our community. The platform is touching lives.
